Warm-up: Act It Out 
Choose a student to come to the front of the classroom.
Show him/her a phonics card from the previous unit or whisper a word and ask the student to act it out.
The remaining students try to guess the correct answer.
The first student to have the correct answer comes to the front of the class and the activity continues.
Presentation & Practice
Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 74): Introduction of letter Y, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Yy 
Show the students the yo-yo phonic card. Point to it and say: /j/. The students repeat.
Then say /j /- yo-yo. The students repeat.
Mime playing with a yo-yo and say: /j /- yo-yo. Encourage the students to do the same.
Say the letter, the students perform the action and the word.
Follow the same procedure: /j/- yellow (point to something yellow), /j /- yacht (rock back and forth from foot to foot and make wave sounds)
Write the letter Yy on the board next to the phonics cards. Point to it and say: “This is the letter /wai/. The letter /wai/ makes the /j / sound. The students repeat both sounds.
Listen and point. Colour. (Track 75): Read the words in sentence 
Point to the yo-yo and say: Yes, I have a yo-yo. Yes, it is yellow! The students repeat.
Do the same procedure for the word yacht 
Play the CD. The students listen and point.
Say: Yes, I have a yo-yo. Yes, it is yellow! Ask the students to point to the corresponding items
Repeat with the remaining item
Ask the students to colour the yo-yo and the yacht yellow.
Go around the classroom ask the students to name the item they are colouring.
Chant and show! (Track 76)
Put up the yo-yo, yellow and yacht phonics cards on the board
Point to the phonics cards and say: /j /- yo-yo, /j /- yellow, /j/- yacht. The students repeat.
Play the CD. The students listen, follow in their books and chant.
Ask the students to do the actions of the words when they chant.
Repeat the chant without the CD. Keep the rhythm by clapping hands. Pause before the words (yo-yo, yellow, yacht) and encourage the students to name the items.
Activity: Chant in group (Optional)
Divide the class into 3 groups (yo-yo, yellow, yacht). Each group says the appropriate chant while the rest of the class claps.
Ask each group to mime the corresponding action or show the corresponding phonics cards while they chant.
Production : Writing in the air
Show the letter Yy again, have students write the Yy in air with their fingers.

Warm-up 
Have students listen to the chant in lesson 1 and sing along. Repeat the chant without the CD, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands or snapping their fingers
Put the phonics cards on the board. Name the items. One at a time, ask students to do corresponding actions then say the sound of the letter and words. 
Presentation & Practice: Pass the phonics card 
Line up the students in two teams (make sure two teams have the same number of members)
Give the first student of each team a phonics card.
Say: ‘Go!” then the students say the words in the card and pass it over their heads to the student behind them, who continues saying the word and passing the card to the behind one.
The last student in each line races to hand their phonics card to the teacher and says the word.
The first team to do so wins (or wins a point- then continue the game).
4. Listen. Read Along (Track 77) 
Ask: Can you see the /j/- yo-yo? Point to it.
Encourage the students to point to the picture of the word that the teacher says.
Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once.
Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story
Read the story. The students follow in their books..
Ask students work in pairs. One reads while the other checks, then they swap roles. 
Activity: Say the Sight Words 
Point to and say the sight words: I, have, a, it, is, too, like, my, and
Have students repeat
Have some students read them aloud.
Activity: Memory Master 
Put up the 3 phonics cards on the board.
Choose 3 students to go to the board and make a line in front of the board.
Choose a student to be “Memory Master”.
The 3 students choose a phonics card and say the word (without touching the cards- each student chooses one phonic card)
The “Memory Master” must hand correct phonics cards to each student.
5. Song (Track 78) 
Put up the yo-yo, yellow, yacht phonics cards up on the board.
Point to the yo-yo and yellow phonics card and say: A yellow yo-yo. The students repeat.
Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song.
Play the CD. The students listen and sing along.
Play the CD again. The pupils sing and do corresponding actions. OR ask the students to take out their own yo-yo, yellow, yacht picture cards and place them on their desks. Play the CD again. The students listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards.
Production: Correct teacher 
Prepare some phonics cards (from this lesson and previous unit)
Ask individual student to correct teacher’s statements.

Warm-up: Chinese Whispers Game
Divide the class into 2 teams with the same numbers of students in each team.
The first student of each team runs to the teacher (at the same time); teacher whispers a word/words/ a simple sentence to them.
The first student whispers the word/words to the student sitting next to or behind him/her and so on.
The last students say the word/words/sentence aloud.
The team has the correct answer is the winner
Presentation & Practice
6. Find and colour the Yy letter 
Point to the letters and elicit their names and sounds
Explain the activity
Ask the students to find and colour the Yy letters
Go around the classroom providing any necessary help.
Ask the student to name the item.
Allow them to colour the rest letters with other colours.
7. Listen, point and repeat. Colour the pictures of the words that start with the y sound. Say the y words (Track 79) 
Show the students the yogurt phonics card. Point to it and say: /j/ - yogurt. Ask them to repeat.
Mime eating yogurt and say: /j/ - yogurt. Encourage the students to do the same
Say the letter. The students perform the action and say the letter and the word (if they can).
Play the CD. The students listen, point to and repeat the word.
Point to the picture and have students name them.
Allow the students some time to colour in the pictures of words start with the /j/ sound.
Go around the classroom providing any necessary help.

Put up the 3 phonics cards on the board.
Choose 3 students to go to the board and make a line in front of the door.
Choose a student to be “Memory Master”.
The 3 students choose a phonics card and say the word (without touching the cards)

Have the students sing and act to the chant/ show the corresponding picture cards. 
Revision & Practice
Trace and say (Page 28 – Activity Book) 
Write on the board the capital letter Y (write slowly to demonstrate its formation).
Point to it and elicit the sound /j/
Show the formation in the air (taking care when facing to the students that the letter is formed the correct way for them).
Repeat with the small letter y
The students trace the letters in their activity books.
Go around and provide any necessary help. Ask the students to say the sound of the letter. 
Trace and match (page 28 – Activity Book)
Explain the activity
First, the students trace the letters in the boxes 
Then draw lines from the letters to the corresponding pictures.
Check around the classroom.
Answer keys: 1 Vv- vase 2 Ww- window 3 Xx- ox 4 Yy- yellow 
Say the words. Circle the correct letter (Page 29 – Activity Book)

Point to the pictures and elicit their names
Ask the students to look at the pictures, say the word and circle the letter their names begin with

Divide the class into 2 teams, A and B. Ask two students from each team to come to the board
Teacher names a vocabulary item. 
In a limited time, the students quickly draw it. 
The student who finishes first wins a point for his/ her team.
The team with more points wins.
