Warm-up: Make up words 
Put up the phonics cards from the previous unit on the board
Write the following letters on the board: g, t, y, r, e, o, c, a, l, w, u
Explain to the students that they have to make up words from the given letters
Ask them to write down the words they can make up
Tell the student to refer to the phonics cards for help.
After a limited time, ask the students to say out the words they made up
Presentation & Practice
Listen, point and repeat. Colour (Track 80): Introduction of letter Z, its sound and how to pronounce the words beginning with Zz 
Show the students the zoo phonic card. Point to it and say: /z/. The students repeat.
Then say /z /- zoo. The students repeat.
Mime the sounds of different animals and say: /z /- zoo. Encourage the students to do the same.
Follow the same procedure: /z/- zebra (mime galloping), /z/- zip (mime zipping up)
Write the letter Zz on the board next to the phonics cards. 
Activity: Which One Is Missing?
Put the phonics cards face up on the table/stick them on the board (may use some cards from the previous lessons)
Give the students 10 seconds to look at the cards.
Have students close their eyes and then you take away one cards.
Tell the students to open their eyes and name the missing cards
Listen and point. Colour. (Track 81): Read the words in sentence 
Point to the zoo and say: Look! A zoo! The students repeat.
Do the same procedure for zebra and zip 
Play the CD. The students listen and point.
Say: Look! A zoo! Ask the students to point to the corresponding item in the picture 
Repeat with the remaining item Look! A zebra! Look! A zip on the zebra!
Ask the students to colour the zebra and the zip. 
Chant and show! (Track 82) 
Put up the zoo, zebra and zip phonics cards on the board
Point to the phonics cards and say: /z /- zoo, /z /- zebra, /z/- zip. The students repeat.
Play the CD. The students listen, follow in their books and chant.
Ask the students to take out their own zoo, zebra, zip picture cards and place them on their desks. Play the CD again, ask them to listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards 
Repeat the chant without the CD. Keep the rhythm by clapping hands. Pause before the words (zoo, zebra, zip) and encourage the students to name the items.
Activity: Chant in group 
Divide the class into 3 groups (zoo, zebra, zip). Each group says the appropriate chant while the rest of the class claps.
Ask each group to show the corresponding phonics cards while they chant.
Production: Writing in the air
Show the letter Zz again, have students write the Zz in air with their fingers.

Warm-up
Have students listen to the chant in lesson 1 and sing along. Repeat the chant without the CD, keep the rhythm by clapping their hands or snapping their fingers
Put the phonics cards on the board. Name the items. One at a time, ask students to do corresponding actions then say the sound of the letter and words. 
Presentation & Practice: Thumbs up or down 
Hold up the phonics cards one at a time to show to the students
Say the name of the item on the card (Teacher can say correctly or not) and ask the students to verify the word you say is correct or not by putting their thumbs up (correct) and down (incorrect). 
Encourage the students to give the correct answer
4. Listen. Read Along (Track 83)
Ask: Can you see the /z/- zoo? Point to it.
Play the CD. Have the students listen to the story once.
Play the CD again. The students listen and point to the pictures of the key words when they hear them in the story
Ask students work in pairs. One reads while the other checks, then they swap roles. Or one reads the printed words while the other looks at the pictures and says the words.
Go around the classroom to provide any necessary help.
Activity: Say the Sight Words 
Point to and say the sight words: This, is, a, in, the, look, at, funny, with
Have students repeat
Have some students read them aloud.
5. Song (Track 84) 
Put up the zoo, zebra, zip phonics cards up on the board.
Point to the zoo and zebra phonics card and say: This is a zebra in the zoo. The students repeat.
Follow the same procedure and present the rest of the song.
Play the CD. The students listen and sing along.
Play the CD again, ask the students to take out their own zoo, zebra, zip picture cards and place them on their desks. Play the CD again. The students listen and hold up the corresponding picture cards.
Production: Hot cards 
Divide the class into teams (depends on the desk rows in the classroom)
Hand out a phonics card to the first student of each team/ row
Play the song, the first students pass the phonics cards to the next one in their team/ row. When the card comes to the last student of each team/ row, pass it backward
Pause the song, the students holding the phonics cards must name them
Give one point for the correct answer
Teacher can change the cards or hand out some more cards as necessary.
The team with the most points wins

Warm-up: What is it?
Teacher holds up a phonics card, partly hidden by a sheet of paper. 
Slowly reveal the phonics cards. The students try to guest what the phonics card is.
Teacher can use some more cards from the previous units.
Presentation & Practice
6. Which ones begin with the z sound? Colour. 
Point to the letters and elicit their names and sounds
Explain the activity
Ask the students to find and colour the pictures with the z sound
Go around the classroom providing any necessary help
Ask the student to name the other items.
7. Listen, point and repeat. Colour the pictures of the words that start with the z sound. Say the z words (Track 85) 
Show the students the zero phonics card. Point to it and say: /z/ - zero. Ask them to repeat
Make a zero with your thumb and your index finger and say: /z/ - zero. Encourage the students to do the same
Say the letter. The students perform the action and say the letter and the word (if they can).
Play the CD. The students listen, point to and repeat the word.
Point to the picture and have students name them.
Allow the students some time to colour in the pictures of words start with the /z/ sound.
Go around the classroom providing any necessary help.
Production: Make up words 
Put up the four phonics cards on the board
Write some letters on the board (make sure that the letters can make up the four words of the phonics cards)
Explain to the students that they have to make up words from the given letters
Ask them to write down in their notebook the words they can make up
Tell the student to refer to the phonics cards for help.

Have the students sing and show the corresponding picture cards. 
Revision & Practice
Trace and say (Page 30 – Activity Book)
Write on the board the capital letter Z (write slowly to demonstrate its formation).
Point to it and elicit the sound /z/
Show the formation in the air (taking care when facing to the students that the letter is formed the correct way for them).
Repeat with the small letter z
The students trace the letters in their activity books.
Go around and provide any necessary help. Ask the students to say the sound of the letter. 
Trace and match (page 30 – Activity Book) 
Explain the activity
First, the students trace the letters in the boxes 
Then draw lines from the letters to the corresponding pictures.
Check around the classroom.
Answer keys: 1 Vv- violin 2 Ww- well 3 Xx- taxi 4 Yy- yacht 
Activity: Speed race
Divide the class into 2 teams, A and B. Ask 2 students from each team to come to the board
Write the four words zoo, zebra, zip, zero on the board.
Teacher calls out/ shows the phonics card of one of the phonic cards, the 2 students have to race to touch the word. 
The student who touches first wins a point for his/ her team.
The team with the more points wins.
Write the letter Zz. Colour the pictures of the words that start with the z sound (Page 31 – Activity Book) 
Explain the activity
Point to the pictures and elicit their names
Ask the students to write the letter Zz in the box
Ask them to colour the pictures that start with the z sound.
Go around and provide any necessary help.

Whisper one of the vocabulary words (from this unit) to the student.
Without speaking, the student draw a picture of the word on the board 
The first team to guess the word correctly wins a point.
Repeat the activity with a student from the other team.
The team with more points wins the game.
